Winner of BETA Innovation Award 2018
HORSECARE EQUIPMENT & CLOTHING
Winner: Treehouse | Product: AeroChill cooling rug
The rug is designed to aid in cooling a horse, alleviating heat exhaustion and helping muscle recovery. It is made of a super-absorbent polymer fibre fabric that pulls heat from the horse and improves blood circulation.
Judges’ comments: “The science behind this product is admirable. It is very good quality, realistically priced, useful in all disciplines and comes in fantastic packaging.”
Highly Commended: Horseware Products | Product: Amigo Hero ACY Plus with air-conditioned yarn
This 900-denier fabric is air-blown, resulting in a tighter weave using less yarn and offering an incredibly durable, breathable and lightweight product.
Judges’ comments: “This is a great advancement in fabric technology, increasing horse comfort and satisfying consumer needs.”
Testimonial from Endurance Rider - Victoria Smith,
Victoria Smith, has competed in endurance for over 16 years and rides at Advanced level. She is also Chair of the Heart of England Group of Endurance GB.
Rug results: Tested on an 18 year old Haflinger mare at the Red Dragon ride over the Black Mountains in mid Wales. Competed on 3 consecutive days totalling 126km (42k Friday, 48k Saturday, 36k Sunday) October 2017.
Day1: The Control: The first day I didn’t use the rug, walked for the final mile - final heart rate (after 30 mins) 56 bpm (needs to be under 64 to pass but lower HR goes towards the criteria for obtaining a higher grade and therefore points for the ride).
Day2:, The mare walked/trotted final mile – final heart rate (after 30 mins) 48 bpm - HR was 70bpm 20 minutes after finishing – we walked with the rug on for the final 10 mins
Day3: (tired horse), trotted final mile - final heart rate (after 30 mins) 54 bpm - HR was 86bpm 20 minutes after finishing – we walked with the rug on for the final 10 mins
Over the 6 rides I have completed on Gizmo this year her final HR has never been below 55bpm.
Article from The British Grooms Association Magazine August 2018
The Aerochill rug and boots are designed to aid in cooling a horse, alleviating heat exhaustion and helping muscle recovery. They are made of a superabsorbent polymer fibre fabric that pulls heat from the horse and improves blood circulation. Because the rug and boots decrease recovery time this can help to maximise performance. AeroChill Cooling Boots provided 5/8˚C reduction in thermal skin temperature over 10 minutes, while the AeroChill Cooling Rug provided 12/14˚C reduction in thermal skin temperature over 10 minutes. The attached thermographic shows spot 1 after wearing the cooling boot for 10 minutes 21.5˚C. Spot 2 shows the area of the leg that did not have AeroChill cooling boots - this is reading at 30.3˚C. In summary the results have concluded that both cooling solutions left a cooling thermal skin temperature when removed.
Directions for use:
Activation: The rugs need 2 elements to work; water and airflow. For first time of use wet in a large bucket of water for 10-15 minutes, but after this for future uses put in a large bucket for 2 - 5 minutes. (Our customers tip is that they have been putting water into the cool bag it is supplied with and this works well]. Squeeze the water out so they are wet but not dripping and put on the horse by securing the straps and fillet string.
Apply: Straight after competition or exercise, put the rug on and then walk the horse off either in hand, or on a horse walker or grazing in hand. Leave on for approx 25-35 minutes and then return to your normal regime. Or reapply the rug by simply reactivating it by getting it wet again.
Recovery:The rug accelerate the recovery of the back muscles and vital organs such as lowering the heart rate by taking the heat out of the muscles.

— Australian Mens Cricket Team
TechNiche ANZ have been supplying the Australian Mens Cricket Team with Cooling Vests and Towels for quite some time now. They were certainly needed in the recent tour of Bangladesh. The extreme heat and humidity in Chittagong had a serious effect on a number of the players, including Peter Handscomb.
The TechNiche Cool Towel Pro's provided a great cooling effect around the head and neck and assisted Peter to reduce the effects of heat stress and continue to play for the remainder of the session.

— Techniche ANZ HyperKewl Hat featured.
We recently had a customer that tested the cooling effect of our HyperKewl fabric when placed inside a hat using an insert. The results, as demonstrated below, were quite remarkable. There was over a 35 degree difference between the temperature at the brim and the temperature inside the hat when the insert was saturated (soaked in water). Now keep in mind that this was a basic test not conducted in a research facility, but would be more akin to field testing under various controls. Nonetheless, the results, or rather impact on cooling the individual, were impressive enough that I thought that I would share some of the data.
Temperature before placing insert Degrees Celsius | Time | Hat peak | Top of hat | Temp inside crown of hat | % Cooler inside hat |
Chilled insert | 3:00PM | 52 | 37.7 | 26.1 | 50% Cooler |
Saturated Insert | 3:00PM | 48.8 | 33.3 | 28.8 | 41% Cooler |
Dry Insert | 3:00PM | 50 | 50 | 44.4 | 11% Cooler |
TechNiche Evaporative cooling caps – saturated proved up to 30% better cooling inside the crown than a regular hat, and if placed in chilled water, provide up to 39% better cooling!
